Toy Museum

Salzburg, Austria

As well as exhibiting historical toys and games, the ‘Spielzeug Museum’ also offer plenty of rides, toys and games for children to enjoy hands-on excitement. They can send marbles racing around in the special marble run room, speed around on bobby cars or put their feet to the floor on the Carrera racetrack. ‘Experiences’, ‘games’ and ‘fascination’ are the three central themes spotlighted for large and small visitors alike. On the ground floor there are the marble runs, gigantic wooden toy construction sets, bobby cars and plenty of space to run around and play. On the first floor the focus is on hands-on involvement with teddy and his friends in the chamber of treasures and the doll’s house. The miniature shop gives children a chance to smell and taste real spices, play ‘customer and shopkeeper’ and see what a ‘super market’ was like a hundred years ago. ‘Putting the pedal to the metal’ is what the Carrera racetrack is all about. Then it’s on to the labyrinth, into the shadow room, see the miniature toys and then the small-scale exhibition of artefacts ‘from the collection’ owned by the Spielzeug Museum. On the second floor there are a number of locomotives, carriages and wagons from years gone by ready to be driven around the 12-metre model railway circuit.
