On the Trail of the Habsburgs

The great Habsburg dynasty ruled over Austria for many centuries. They left many castles and palaces as well as gardens and parks for the next generations to admire. This program will lead you to the world of royal life and history, and the mighty buildings that Vienna is proud of.

Day 1: Arrival - Vienna

Arrive at the airport and transfer to your hotel in Vienna where you will spend your next 4 days.

Day 2: Vienna City Tour

The guided walk will begin from the heart of Vienna in front of St Stephan’s Cathedral (exterior visit only). This is where the "Viennese double wedding" took place in 1515, the historically significant event that later brought the Habsburgs both the Hungarian and Bohemian crowns. From the cathedral, the tour continues via the Kärntner Strasse to the imperial vault, which is the most important burial place of the Habsburgs. Your guide will then take you past the Church of the Augustinian Friars, where Emperor Franz Joseph and Sisi exchanged their marital vows in 1854.

The tour ends at the Hofburg, which houses the Sisi Museum, the Imperial State Apartments, and the Imperial Silver Collection. In the former private rooms of Franz Joseph and Sisi, you can see some of the original furniture, valuable silverware, and private possessions of the Habsburgs. In the afternoon drive to Schönbrunn Palace and visit the former summer residence of the Habsburgs (the tour might be altered according to your wishes)

Day 3: City Tour

Visit the castle of Schloss Hof, the former imperial country residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy and Maria Theresia is over 50 hectares, making it Austria’s largest palace grounds in the countryside. See the magnificent stately rooms and receive an insight into what life was like in imperial times.

The tour will show you Maria Theresia’s widow’s apartment, which has been restored to its original state. A particular highlight of Schloss Hof is the chapel in which – it is reported - one of the few Habsburg love marriages took place in 1766 between Maria Christina and Albert von Sachsen-Teschen.
